Los Angeles Set to Be Largest GMO-Free Zone in USA

International outrage against Monsanto and GMOs by activists and concerned citizens at large is paying off once again. Just days after Mexico announced a complete ban on the growth of GMO corn, Los Angeles lawmakers have now gone on record in setting up Los Angeles to be the largest GMO-free region in the United States. 


Specifically, L.A. politicians are responding to the call for a ban on the cultivation, sale, and even distribution of GMOs at large. In other words, an entirely ‘GMO-free’ zone. 

This would be one of the most powerful pieces of legislation to pass in the fight against Monsanto that has ever been seen — especially in the Monsanto-owned United States, where even the USDA has given Monsanto’s genetically modified creations special ‘speedy approval’ access to their regulation techniques. 

Politicians Forced to Act 

But even despite Monsanto’s tentacles being locked deep inside the political system, we are now seeing politicians who are forced into taking action by their supporters. This appears to be the case with Los Angeles City Councilmen Paul Koretz and Mitch O’Farrell, who are responsible for introducing the motion and subsequently addressing the demands of the population. 

And thanks to activism and the high-powered spread of information on the subject of Monsanto and GMOs, we are seeing this kind of action on a much more frequent basis.

 In fact, the number of politicians now driven to fight against Monsanto in order to retain support is climbing to the point where my prediction of Monsanto’s economic downfall within the next few years may indeed become a reality thanks to enraged voters. 

Just look at how much information is being launched into the mainstream even in major media reports on the Los Angeles initiative, with City Councilman Kortez stating: 

“A growing number of problems are being traced to GMOs,.. the evolution of ‘superbug’ insects which are growing immune to the pesticides engineered within GMO crops” and ”‘seed drift’ (for example the recent finding of GMO-pollinated wheat growing in an Oregon farmer’s field).” 

These are the facts we have been telling you for years, and it is a major victory to see them now reaching millions more around the globe. If Los Angeles is able to push through the GMO ban into city wide regulation, it would be a direct blow to the beast that is Monsanto and the biotech industry at large.

How to detox your body from GMOs and Pesticides

Detoxing can be hard on your body and cause a wide variety of alarming side effects. The delicious culinary herb cilantro, happens to be one of the most effective and gentle detoxifiers of mercury, heavy metals and other toxic contaminants. It’s inexpensive and works without the addition of man-made chemicals. Cilantro also possesses antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, quickly reducing infection and inflammation as it works to clear your system.

4 Natural Cancer Treatments

In 1976, the anti-cancer activity of graviola leaves (soursop’s alternate name is graviola) was first noted by the National Cancer Institute, stating that “The NCI, or the National Cancer Institute did some research on the guanabana cancer cure [sic] and came up with some interesting results. The study…showed that the leaves and stems of the plant were incredibly efficient at destroying certain cancerous cells in the body.” This study was not publicly released, however, subsequent research on graviola conducted at Purdue University has proven promising results.

Much of Purdue’s research focused on the anti-tumour properties of annonaceous acetogenins. Oberlies, Chang, and McLaughlin found that tumour cells that are resistant to chemotherapy treatment, or, multi-drug resistant (MDR) cells, were effectively destroyed by acetogenins. MDR cells develop resistance to all chemotherapy treatments, leaving the patient at a dead end. MDR cells require incredible amounts of cellular energy (Adenosine triphosphate; ATP) in order to rid themselves of these chemotherapeutic drugs. This made MDR cancer cells prime targets for acetogenins that were found to effectively block ATP transfer into these cells, inhibiting their function in a way that eventually leads to cell death.

It is important to note as well, that researchers who have explored the mechanisms used by graviola areonly  specific to cancerous cells, and not healthy cells. Why? Because cancer cells have a consistently higher level of cellular activity, and thus produce a much higher level of ATP, and is better recognized and targeted by the acetogenin molecules. This is of benefit to the user since chemotherapy targets BOTH normal (such as stomach and hair cells) and cancerous cells, causing the often devastating side effects of nausea, weight loss, hair loss, and overall low quality of life for cancer patients. Graviola only targets cancerous cells, thus our other cells are left untouched.

One study conducted at the Catholic University of South Korea and published in the Journal of Natural Products stated that graviola was 10,000 times more effective against cancer than the popular chemotherapy drug, Adriamycin. A second study from South Korea showed that graviola had no negative activity on healthy cells (unlike the devastating effects Adriamycin has on the body), as we saw previously.

This plant’s ability to cure cancer only recently came into light when researchers at the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Centre found that compounds from this plant wiped out pancreatic tumours in mice, and showed no signs of tumours after 40 days or after discontinuing the treatment.

The natural compound, triptolide, found in lei gong teng, has been shown in numerous studies to induce apoptosis (cell death) in cancerous cells. In one study, the apoptosis induced by triptolide was mediated by up-regulating the expression of a gene associated with apoptosis called caspase-3 and bax, making triptolide a potential treatment for cancers of the pancreas.

“This drug is just unbelievably potent in killing tumour cells,” said Ashok Saluja, a vice chairman of research at the Masonic Cancer Centre. “You could see that every day you looked at those mice, the tumour was decreasing and decreasing, and then just gone.”

Unfortunately, researchers have now found a way to isolate triptolide into a new drug called minnelide, which is a modified form of the diterpenoid compound triptolide, isolated from the thunder god vine. Under normal circumstances, Big Pharma would not be able to make any money off the thunder god vine, since you cannot patent nature. With this new drug, minnelide, however, Big Pharma will get a big FDA stamp of approval which will allow the newly patented, nutritionally ruined triptolide to be sold for hundreds and thousands of dollars.

Instead, just take the herb itself! There is no need for isolating compounds from a plant, when you can simply purchase the plant itself and consume it fresh and un-tampered.

Mangosteen
The variety of phytonutrients in mangosteen are plenty. In fact, the mangosteen is one of the only fruits that contain high levels of xanthones (xanthones are found in small amounts throughout nature, however it is most concentrated in the mangosteen rind)What are xanthones? They are a class of plant derived nutrients that hold tremendous nutritional value – there are over 20 varieties of them, however, the most widely studied are Alpha Mangostin and Gamma Mangostin.

Many Laboratory studies have conclusively found the ability of xanthones to eradicate and destroy cancer cells. Xanthones both destroy cancer and stop tumour development at each stage of the cancer forming process.

Do You Know How Hot Dogs Are Really Made?

We all know that hot dogs are not the healthiest food, but many people will consume them regardless. What’s the harm in consuming a few frankfurters here and there at BBQs, sporting events and gatherings right? Everything in moderation right? Unsuspecting consumers have no idea what really constitutes a hot dog. Even workers at hot dog factories say it’s an unpleasant business. Arguably one of the most processed, industrial foods in the world, Americans eat almost 200 million hot dogs in the summer months alone.
There’s nothing like appetizing meat mush mixed with powdered preservatives, flavourings and red colouring. Most who consume hot dogs regularly likely don’t care much about their health, but for those who think an occasional hot dog won’t hurt you, get informed about the industry and you may change your mind.
Hot dogs are as diverse as the population. Each area claims it has the best, or the healthiest and consumers certainly have their preferences. Two of the most popular hot dog styles are New York and Chicago. Natives of these cities are as dedicated to their hot dogs as sports fans are to their teams and they’re top sellers at sporting events.
It’s not that we can’t make hotdogs healthier, it’s that the industry doesn’t want to. People who become addicted to the specific color, smell, taste and texture of their favorite brands are very particular and loyal.
The cheapest hot dogs don’t just taste awful, but they can be disastrous to your health. Even one hot dog can create an inflammory cascade within the body. There is now scientific evidence that hot dogs — like all processed meats — increase the risk of cancer. But the meat industry shovels a lot of something special to shelter that information from the public.

Hot Dogs Are Good For Us Now?

For example, take Kansas State University researchers. They claim hot dogs, as well as pepperoni and deli meats, are relatively free of carcinogenic compounds.
That’s right! No need to fret about that juicy hot dog anymore because J. Scott Smith, professor of food chemistry, and his K-State research team say it’s OK. It just another fine demonstration of junk science at its best and food industry criminals investigating their own crimes.The ready-to-eat product project was a collaboration with several other K-State researchers and appeared in Meat Science, the journal of the American Meat Science Association.
Smith’s research was supported by the the American Meat Institute Foundation and the National Pork Board Checkoff. Actually the American Meat Institute insists that “the most important fact is that the larger body of evidence has shown that processed meats are a healthy part of a balanced diet.” Need I say more??

Hot Dogs Are Linked To Disease

The truth is, eating processed meat, such as hot dogs, sausage or processed deli meats, is associated with a 42% higher risk of heart disease and a 19% higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
Consumption of hot dogs, sausages and luncheon meats, along with other forms of processed meat, was also associated with the greatest risk of pancreatic cancer in a large multi-ethnic study.
Eating too many processed foods with high sodium levels contributed to 2.3 million deaths from heart attacks, strokes and other heart-related diseases throughout the world in 2010, representing 15 percent of all deaths due to these causes, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions.
The World Cancer Research Fund recommends people avoid all processed meats.
The fund’s Dr Rachel Thompson said: “If everyone ate less than 70g a week — or two hot dogs — it would mean there would be 4,000 fewer cases of bowel cancer…”

What’s Inside A Hot Dog?

Traditional hot dogs are made from pork trimmings and a mash of left over after chops, bacon and cut aways from ham, chicken or turkey.
The meat is ground into a slimy paste and mixed with water, preservatives, flavouring and colours.
The red or light brown dog varieties usually on sale everywhere contain very little real meat. Instead, they are made up of 64 percent mechanically-recovered chicken and 17 percent is pork.
Mechanically-recovered meat is the slimy paste created when a carcass — stripped of all traditional cuts — is forced through a metal sieve or blasted with water.
The process is banned for beef, but is permitted for pigs and poultry, and the meat produced is ten times cheaper than normal meat.

HOT DOG INGREDIENTS

Fluoridated Water

All hot dogs need water to create the right consistency for the mushy paste, which is then squeezed into tubes and cooked. What kind of water you ask? Toxic fluoridated water of course. High Fructose Corn Syrup

Or HFCS is added to more than 60% of all hot dogs in the United States. For what reason a hot dog need a sweetener is beyond me. According to two recent U.S. studies, almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup contained mercury.

Starch

All sausages — from the cheapest, nastiest brands, to the luxury free-range organic ones — are bulked out with carbohydrate starch. Hot dogs usually contain GMO potato starch or wheat flour mixed with salt, baked and crumbled. Starches give more volume to a hot dog. They also bind ingredients together, and make the mechanically-recovered meat and pork trimmings feel more pleasant on the tongue.

Salt

Hot dogs contain around 2 percent table salt, which means they are classed as high-salt foods. A single 35g hot dog has up to 0.6g of salt. Not high mineral salts which are good for our health but bleached, colored and chemically manufactured table salt.

Milk Protein

Adding powdered milk proteins from pasteurized milk sources to the meat slurry also helps to bind it. Many hot dog manufactures use soy protein, which can also bulk out the hot dog and provide another source of GMO ingredients.

Sodium Nitrite

Processed meat increases the risk of bowel cancer and sodium nitrite is thought to be largely to blame. It is added to hot dogs to stop them going grey, and keeping microbes at bay. Studies on animals have linked sodium nitrites to an increased risk of cancer.
The World Cancer Research Fund carried out a global study on the dangers of processed meats and found that people who regularly consume 50g of processed meat a day — equivalent to one-and-a-half hot dogs — increase their chances of getting bowel cancer by 20 percent. The charity believes nitrites are largely to blame.
In the body, nitrites can react with protein-rich foods such as meat to produce N-nitroso compounds, or NOCs. Some types of NOCs damage the DNA in our cells and cause cancer.
In 2006, scientists analysed more than 60 studies and found that nitrites are also linked to higher risks of stomach cancer.

Flavors

By law, hot dog packets don’t have to say what flavourings are used in them. Many use artificial smoke flavouring, and spices where monosodium glutamate hides and does not have to be labeled.
A few brands use the chemical MSG or E621 to enhance the flavour. MSG gives food a ‘meaty’ feel and is used in soups, sauces and, infamously, Chinese takeaways.

Potassium and Sodium Triphosphates

These are synthetically produced colourless salts that act as a ‘stabiliser, buffer and emulsion’. They give a hot dog a firmer texture, keep it at the right acidity and allow the oils and fats to mix with the water. They are also used in detergents as a water softener, and is added to flame retardants, paper, rubber and anti-freeze.

Polyphosphates (E452)

Another additive common in food. E452 is an emulsifier and stabiliser, improving the texture of the hot dog and stopping fat going rancid. It also helps prevents specific bacteria because even bacteria are wise enough to stay out of poison. Polyphosphates cause a more rapid progression of specific ailments such as chronic kidney disease. Synthetic polyphosphate additives have also been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and they’re linked to accelerated aging and interfering with the way your body activates vitamin D.

Sodium Ascorbate

A synthetic form of vitamin C, sodium ascorbate is an antioxidant and acidity regulator that stops meat losing its red colour speeds up the curing process. When is taken in supplement form it can cause lung and skin irritation.

Carmine

Carmine is another word for the red food dye cochineal, obtained from the aluminium salt of carminic acid, which is produced by some scale insects. For cochineal is made by crushing up the shells of small beetles. The shells are boiled in ammonia or sodium carbonate and the colour filtered off. Carmine is used in the manufacture of artificial flowers, paints, crimson ink, rouge, and other cosmetics, and is routinely added to food products.The colour can trigger allergic reactions and even anaphylactic shock in some people.
If you think that buying the finest most natural hot dogs allows you the bypass the ingredients above, you would be mistaken. The most natural 100% beef or pork hot dogs have been found containing the same exact ingredients, many packaged using the terms “natural” and “wholesome”.
Next time you consider having just one hot dog, think about what’s in it. There are hundreds of other choices, including other junk food which are far healthier. It’s all about choices and where you draw the line.

Mexico and Hawaii Ban GMO's

Both Mexico and Hawaii have passed new legislation against GMO as people worldwide march against Monsanto

Christof Lehmann , - The Big Island of Hawaii County Council Committee has passed a GMO prohibition bill which is progressing to the full Council on 16 October. A Mexican judge has banned GMO corn, citing that it poses an imminent threat. People worldwide are again marching against Monsanto, the main producer of GMO´s. The developments in Hawaii and Mexico indicate that the campaign to raise awareness about GMO´s and GMO food giants is gaining momentum. 
People are marching against GMO and Monsanto, again. The website of the Russian TV channel Russia Today (RT) reports, that rallies, drawing hundreds of protesters each, have been held in some 500 cities worldwide.
Rallies are, among others, being held in Berlin, Strasbourg, Chicago, London, Sydney and Mumbai. In May 2013 some two million worldwide went into the streets to march against Monsanto and GMO.
Even though the rallies on Sunday 13 October did not mobilize millions, it seems that the persistence of the campaigners and increased public awareness about the necessity to take part in taking action is yielding results worldwide.
Big Island of Hawai may Ban GMO. The Big Island of Hawaii County Council Committee has passed a GMO prohibition Bill by a vote of 6-2. The Bill 113 passed out of committee and is progressing to the full Council, set for October 16th.
If the bill passes, it will be a significant victory for those, worldwide, who are concerned about the dangers of GMOs. The legislation will ban all open air cultivation of GMOs, with the exception of papaya which already has genetically modified forms being grown on the island.
Although the final adoption would constitute a major victory for the opponents of GMOs, some criticize the council and the bill for having a blind spot with regards to GM papaya. The Hawaiian organic farmer, Melanie Bondera, asks why the creators of genetically-engineered papaya fruit had to work so hard to introduce it.
Bondera asks in NW RAGE, if the GE papaya is really a simple solution to a major agricultural disease that farmers want, it would be readily adopted by governments, farmers and markets. However, it is not. The concern over this genetically modified organism (GMO) food is so great, that it creates resistance, loss of markets, contamination and more loss of markets…
Judge bans genetically-engineered corn in Mexico, citing that it poses an imminent danger. The winds of change have also begun blowing over Mexican corn fields. On 10 October media in Mexico City cited the group La Copachera for announcing that genetically engineered corn has been banned in Mexico.
According to the press release issued by La Copachera, a Mexican Federal Judge has ordered Mexico´s Secretariat of Agriculture (SAGARPA) and the SEMARNAT, which is a secretariat similar to the Environmental protection Agency (EPA) in the USA to:
Immediately suspend all activities involving the planting of transgenic corn in the country and end the granting of permission for experimental and pilot commercial plantings”.
The unprecedented ban on GMOs in Mexico was issued by judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo J, at the Twelfth Federal District Court of Mexico City. As the basis for the order, judge Jaime Verdugo cited:
the risk of imminent harm to the environment”.
Judge slams Transnationals Monsanto, Pioneer and others. The judge also ruled that transnationals like Monsanto and Pioneer are banned from the release of transgenic maize in the Mexican countryside as long as collective action lawsuits, initiated by citizens, farmers, scientists, and civil society organizations are working their way through the judicial system.
One of the groups working its way through the legal system is the Acción Collectiva (Collective Action), led by the christian cleric, Father Miguel Concha of the Human Rights Center Fray Francisco de Vittoria. Acción Collectiva aims, according to one of its press releases, at achieving an absolute federal declaration on the suspension of the introduction of transgenic maize in all of its forms, including experimental and pilot commercial plantings in Mexico.
Rene Sanchez Galindo, the legal council for the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, stated that the ruling of Judge Jaime Verdugo constitutes a milestone in the long struggle of citizen demands for a GMO free country. Galindo added, that the ruling has serious enforcement provisions and includes the possibility of criminal charges for the authorities responsible for allowing the introduction of transgenic corn in Mexico.
Especially Monsanto is internationally infamous for its use of lobbyists within the governments of nations where it is doing business, leading elected officials to effectively represent Monsanto rather than their electorate. Corruption with regards to Monsanto is rampant and well documented, so is the transnational giant´s abuse of the country’s judicial system and the strategy to draw opponents into protracted legal battles which often lead to the bankruptcy of the plaintiff.
The ruling by Judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo is setting a clear signal to the members of Mexico´s regulatory authorities by making them liable to criminal charges if they violate the rules.
Even though today´s rallies against Monsanto and GMO have not mobilized two million, like the March in May, marching against Monsanto and GMOs seems to make an impact.
